Keszthely, the largest and oldest settlement on Lake Balaton was an important trading centre in Roman times: the remains of its former castrum can be seen in FENÉKPUSZTA.
The 14th century Gothic PARISH CHURCH (Fő tér) acted as the town castle during the Turkish period; its late Renaissance frescos were only recently uncovered.
The third largest mansion in the country is the 101-room FESTETICS MANSION with finely wrought gate and Baroque tower. Here visitors will discover the HELIKON MANSION MUSEUM (Kastély u. 1.) and the intact HELIKON LIBRARY containing 8,000 rare books. Its owner, György Festetics, was founder of Europe's first agricultural school, the Georgikon, the history of which is covered in the GEORGIKON FARM MUSEUM (Bercsényi Miklós u. 67.).
The BALATON MUSEUM (Múzeum u. 2.) hosts the exhibition "Balaton and Man" plus Roman remains uncovered in the Balaton region. Chamber concerts are held in the mirrored gala hall of the Festetics Mansion.
