In the beginning the Hotel Gellert in Budapest was designed to meet the grand expectations of high society during the roaring 20's and 30's. The beautiful art nouveau building in combination with the splendid and world wide incomparably luxurious baths and spa facilities of the Hotel set a scenery, which was and is always designated to not only the rich but also to the connoisseur. Hence kitchen art was always an important feature of the house and it makes nobody wonder that Károly Gundel first gained fame operating the Gellert's Restaurant before the Second World War. Following Gundel as the Restaurant's Chef, the Gellért saw numerous creative and highly appreciated chefs who at any time were able to meet and exceed the requirements needed for operating a Gourmet Restaurant's kitchen.
also local cooking traditions besides the nouvelle cuisine tasks were always
needed in the Hotel Gellért. Ferenc Novak who was Executive Chef in the Gellért
for the last two decades of the 20th century was a master of combining
traditional Hungarian cooking style with International Cuisine, an expertise
which made him the highest decorated Chef of Hungary during his active time. Now
the task for the new Millennium in the Hotel Gellért is to again set the
standards for the luxury traveller and businessman, for the connoisseur and the
dandy, surely for the gourmet, and this needs an Executive Chef who is able to
put all these tasks into action and continue the long tradition of excellent
cooking in the Hotel Gellert. With István Varga the Gellért Hotel is so
fortunate to have a kitchen artist who is capable of succeeding in the highest
challenges having unparalleled creativity and taste. We are proud to offer the
great tradition of excellent cooking in the Hotel Gellért to the rising star of
the Hungarian Chefs working his magic in our kitchen and taking the Hotel's
gastronomic tradition to a new peak.
