List of hotels around Lake Balaton, Hungary
Balaton, the "Hungarian Sea" - so this lake 77 km long in the centre of Transdanubia with its opalescent, yellow-green, silky-smooth waters is known, and which is one of the country's most precious natural resources and most visited resort. With a surface area of 600 sqkm it is Central Europe's largest lake, the shoreline runs for 195 km in total, at its widest it is 14 km, and at its deepest 12.4 metres. The southern shore's shallow water is ideal for young children, while the northern shore suddenly deepens and also has long beaches. In summer the water temperature is between 20-26°C making it even warmer in the morning and evening than the air. The silky mud and water are good for nervous complaints, anaemia and exhaustion.
Balatonfured - This distinguished Balaton spa town has the honour of being the place where the first Balaton steamship departed from, the first yachting club was founded here, and it was here that the rich and famous of last century built their villas. For 300 years the curative, slightly acidic waters of the Füred springs have been taken by those with heart problems.
Tihany - Recognizable from a distance because of its twin-towered church, this volcanic-origin peninsula jutting out into the lake has been inhabited for almost 1000 years, and is covered with a variety of rare flora and fauna. From the Benedictine Abbey which was founded in 1055, only the crypt - one of Hungary's most precious architectural treasures - has survived in which the tomb of King Andrew I. lies.
Héviz - The world's second largest warm water lake at 49,000 sqm, with renowned curative effects and covered with water lilies, is located just 6 km from the northern shore of the Balaton. Daily 60 million litres of radioactive, sulphurous water at a temperature of 36°C gushes to the surface, making open-air bathing a pleasant experience even in winter time. The curative mud on the bottom of the lake is a special factor: it is excellent for the treatment of locomotor disorders, rheumatism, inflamed and arthritic conditions. It has been used as a medicinal bath since 1795, and one can request treatment under professional specialist supervision. In any case it is recommended that one undergo an examination before taking a bath cure to ensure the appropriate treatment.
